Intergalactic Guitar Mechanic

Tommy Thayer’s guitar tech Michael Berger strives to make the Spaceman’s sound soar.

For a band from which you want the best and you get the best, you have to have the best road crew to back you up. For each and every tour, KISS puts together a technical dream team, making sure they are in tune and sound good and that everything runs on time. One of the most important jobs for the ax-wielding band on stage is the guitar tech; Michael Berger has been Tommy Thayer’s for just over two years now, and gives us some insight into working with the Spaceman…

KISS MAGAZINE: Can you give us a bit of your history in the music business?

MICHAEL BERGER: Growing up in Germany, I was lucky enough that my parents listened to cool music such as Led Zeppelin, Boston, Bad Company, etc. At the age of 10, a friend gave me a cassette tape of KISS’ Double Platinum album, and in 1980 I saw KISS and Iron Maiden live, and from that moment I knew I needed to be working in this industry. In 1987, I started working with a local band called Destruction, who became well known on the international metal scene. When I was 17, they made me their personal roadie, so to speak. We toured throughout Europe with bands like Motörhead, King Diamond and Slayer’s first European tour. From then on, I pretty much stayed busy as a guitar tech, stage manager, tour manager, crew chief working for international acts such as Deep Purple, Dio, Dream Theater, Thin Lizzy, Sheryl Crow, Dave Stewart, Sarah McLachlan, Buckcherry, Doro, Wishbone Ash and many more.

KISS: How does one become the guitar tech for one of the biggest bands in the world?

BERGER: I have to say it was a dream came true. I always wanted to work for KISS or AC/DC when I was younger. You have to be experienced and good at what you do, of course. The KISS crew contains the finest topnotch techs one can find. Paul Stanley’s guitar tech, Francis Stueber, called me one day and offered me the open position to work for Tommy Thayer. I was, of course, honored that I got the gig, since there was quite a line of people who wanted the job.

KISS: Can you give us some insight on what it’s like to work with Thayer, and how he is as a guitar player?

BERGER: I really enjoy working for Tommy. He is super-nice and very professional. Fantastic player, and he delivers on stage every night. Very solid and consistent.

KISS: Being that there is no band quite like KISS, Gene Simmons’ tech has to deal with blood on the basses, while Paul Stanley smashes his guitar every night. What challenges does Thayer’s setup confront you with?

BERGER: The pyro techs load the rocket guitar, and I make sure to hand Tommy the guitar plugged in and tuned up. He is pretty much on his own triggering the rockets with a three-way trigger system that he operates while on stage. During his solo, I make sure to engage an octave effect as well. On the last run, we also used the fly guitar before the rocket solo. I also boost all of his solos for each song on the amp side. Other than that, I keep the guitars in perfect tune and set up to his satisfaction. I make sure he has stage drinks and that there are plenty of guitar picks on his microphone stands.

It can be a little tricky with the wireless guitar system at times. You can get small dropouts. Our monitor tech scans the local venue frequencies on a daily basis to make sure we get the cleanest signal.

KISS: Walk us through Thayer’s onstage gear: How many guitars does he take on tour, and how many does he use during a KISS show?

BERGER: We currently have seven Gibson Les Paul guitars with us, including a Gibson Les Paul Silver Sparkle 2006, normally used as the fly guitar, a Gibson Les Paul black Classic 2008 as the rocket guitar and a Gibson Explorer Silver Sparkle 2009 mostly used for the encore songs. We have one Gibson Les Paul Honeyburst 1958 [2000 reissue] used for warm-up in the dressing room. We currently use a Gibson Les Paul 1959 [2012 reissue] as his main guitar. If there is a tuning issue, we switch to another. The Tommy Thayer signature-model Les Paul will be available in about two months.

We use two Hughes & Kettner Tommy Thayer signature 100-watt Duotone amps. There are two 4/12 cabinets equipped with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers included in the set. The H&K amps are great, reliable models. I’ve never had any issues with them, and they’re very straightforward rock amps. We use a four-channel Shure UHF UR4D Wireless Systems, a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster for boosting the solo, a DigiTech Whammy for his rocket-guitar solo and a Boss DD-7 Digital Delay for his fly-guitar solo. I use a Whirlwind Multiselector to switch between wireless channels.

KISS: What challenges have you found working with a large co-headlining setup like The Tour with Mötley Crüe?

BERGER: There are some challenges, for sure. On the KISS/Mötley run, we’ve had to deal with fast set changeovers. There is so much equipment—pyro, set, lights, rollercoaster drum risers, etc., but everybody on the crew is eager to get their job done as quickly as possible. Often this is not easy, due to the stage sizes changing on a daily basis. We all have to work hand-in-hand to make this show happen for both bands. It’s a team, and both crews work together, or else the bands go on late and we have strict curfews in most venues. If you go overtime, it will cost KISS money.
On a normal KISS tour, we move everything in place and have time to fine-tune our gear and make sure everything works for the show, and the band does a sound check almost every day. There is no sound check for KISS on The Tour. KISS expects the best, and we deliver.

Tommy Thayer Stockholm In-Store Appearance

Tommy Thayer of KISS will make an exclusive in-store appearance at 4Sound Fridhemsplan in Stockholm, Sweden on Sunday, June 2. The autograph signing event, presented by 4Sound and Epiphone Guitars, will run from 14:00 to 16:00.

A Conversation With Dr. Eric H. Schroeder - KISS Fan

Dr. Eric H. Schroeder wanted to be a dentist since he was an 8-year-old boy growing up in Lancaster. He credited his family dentist for planting an interest that Schroeder could not shake. He worked for two years as a dental technician before entering the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, where today Schroeder teaches a course in gum assessment.

Schroeder was 13 when he discovered KISS, the white-faced metal band that formed in the ’70s. It didn’t take long before he became a passionate fan. Today, Schroeder is 51, and his dental office is a KISS shrine. So is his home behind it.

People Talk: Do they call you Dr. Love?

Eric Schroeder: They call me Dr. Kiss.

PT: Why did you turn your dental practice into a stage?

ES: Because I learned a lesson from the band KISS. They were told many times that their idea for a band was stupid, that it’s never going to work and they were wasting their time. Their response was: “Nobody tells us what we should do. We will succeed.” Thirty-six years later they’re still cranking away.

PT: What do you do best as a dentist?

ES: I’ve been told by a lot of people I’m a real good crown and bridge dentist, but then again I made thousands of crowns as a dental technician. There’s so much more to it than just making a crown. Not everyone can do it, though it’s not as intense as extracting a tooth.

PT: Do you need strength to pull out a tooth?

ES: It’s physics. You use the tooth against itself. You don’t fight the tooth; force does not work.

PT: How are your teeth?

ES: I was gifted with beautiful teeth. Even though candy bars were six for a quarter when I was a kid, and every time I had a quarter I ate six candy bars. And I still have all my teeth.

PT: So how was dental school?

ES: Like I said to the director of undergraduate education after I graduated, it was a real pain in my neck. You had to go through a baptism of fire. There was nothing easy about it. It wasn’t meant to be easy because not everybody can walk out of there a dentist. But I was not going to leave that university without a dental degree.

PT: What do you teach at the dental school?

ES: I call it “gum gardening.” They evaluate people’s gums, the health of the bone, the health of the gingiva.

PT: Do you treat people with your KISS makeup on?

ES: The makeup would be one thing but the full costume? I can not sit down in a regular chair because the boots are 8 inches high. I can’t get up out of the chair. Plus I can’t wear my dental mask.

PT: How do patients react to your passion for KISS?

ES: People like it. It’s a nice way to bond with people because there is no pretension. I am not better than them. I am just a dentist, a normal guy who can fix teeth. I think it’s an icebreaker, really. When the younger kids come in, they kind of get a taste of KISS and they get into it – maybe get some albums or watch Gene Simmon’s “Family Jewels” show.

PT: Have you ever talked to Gene Simmons?

ES: Oh yeah. I met them all. Gene Simmons has my office sign on his Website. I have a stack of tickets 6 inches thick from all the concerts I went to see.

PT: What are your other passions?

ES: I want to preserve my country the way I grew up in it instead of having it change fundamentally to something I don’t like. I am a proud American.

PT: Does your KISS obsession give the profession a bad name?

ES: Not in any way, shape or form. As a matter of fact, I am applying to be on the forensic dentistry staff at the Sheriff’s Department. I was an anthropology major, and it fascinated me.

PT: You live behind your office. Don’t you miss the commute to work?

ES: Nowadays absolutely not. There are too many nuts on the road. I’m safer walking to my office. I really didn’t want to live behind my office, have people banging on my door when they have a toothache but it all worked out perfectly.

PT: When was your last vacation?

ES: I was just in Hawaii. I go there once a year. That’s what I save my stipend from the dental school for.

PT: How else do you pamper yourself?

ES: I’m really not a pamperer, so my pampering is a good shot at the chiropractor and a good massage. They both make me feel good for a long time.

PT: What’s the first thing you do after a hard day at the dentist’s office?

ES: I go home and pick up my cat and tell her I love her. She’s 17. Her name is Hooligan, but I just call her friend.

PT: Where do you think you’ll be 10 years from now?

ES: Hawaii, but the cat is 17 and we can’t go anywhere until she is on her settled ground.

PT: Are you happy?

ES: Sure. Everybody gets their melancholy moods, but I know I’m where I’m supposed to be in life. When I need to move, I’ll get the signals and I’ll rush along. I go with the flow.

PT: Do you think perhaps you were born in the wrong generation?

ES: I have been told many times by my elderly friends that I am wise beyond my years. So I was born in the wrong generation but I am in this generation trying to preserve and cultivate the generation before mine, the one I should have been born in.

PT: Do you have many elderly friends?

ES: I’ve hung out with older people my entire life. I was gifted with the treasures they have, their understandings and the way of life that they lived. Older people are more enriching. There is no nonsense. Today, they’re not talking about “American Idol.” They’re talking about important things. They’re talking about life, responsibility.

PT: You are intense.

ES: Thank you, and I have very low blood pressure, too.

KISS Fan Takes Love Of Band To Extreme

CHILLICOTHE — They looked like something out of a comic book with their elaborate costumes and their faces painted to conceal their identities.

Marvin Chester, not yet 10 years old, had never seen or heard anything like Kiss when he listened to the band’s 1976 album “Destroyer.”

“My uncle told me, ‘There’s this band you have to hear,’” Chester said. “We sat and listened to the whole album. From that point on, I was a diehard Kiss fan.”

“They had the makeup and the costumes. They looked like superheroes. Plus their music was totally awesome,” he said.

Now 45, Chester’s obsession with the band has only intensified.

He owns thousands of pieces of Kiss memorabilia, many of them on display in a Kiss-themed room in his home near Chillicothe. His collection includes records, action figures, lunch boxes, belt buckles — even a toothbrush that plays their hit, “Rock and Roll All Nite.”

“It started with their bubble gum cards and before you knew it, Kiss’ name was on everything you can imagine,” Chester said. “This isn’t even the tip of the iceberg (of what’s available).”

Chester has seen the band in concert more than 15 times. He also has attended several Kiss fan conventions. Many of his collectibles were acquired in trades with other fans.

“Whenever you meet a Kiss fan, you instantly become friends,” he said.

A couple of years ago, Chester took his love of the band one step father when he began performing as “The Demon.” His one-hour, one-man show has him singing over high-quality karaoke tracks impersonating Kiss vocalist and bass player Gene Simmons, complete with full makeup and costume.

Off-stage, Chester is somewhat soft-spoken. When he performs, however, he’s a live wire, spewing fake blood and igniting smoke bombs hidden in his prop guitar.

Past gigs have included Frankfort’s Sunflower Festival and a number of fundraisers.

“I believe in trying to help the community out,” he said.

Chester’s wife, Peggy, runs the sound board when he performs. Although he uses karaoke music as his backing tracks, he doesn’t need any help with the lyrics.

“I know all of their songs by heart,” Chester said. “They kept me out of a lot of trouble. When you’re mad, you start singing along with the band and you forget why you were so stirred up to begin with.”

CUC Hosts Monster KISS Concert

The legendary metal band KISS will be bringing their Monster tour to Credit Union Centre, July 14. It's hard to imagine the heavy rockers were formed 40 years ago in New York. And their legacy continues to grow with new generations of fans discovering the hard rock sound and theatrical performances.

During their career spanning four decades, the band has been endlessly parodied, but few could rival their accomplishments. With over 100 million albums sold worldwide, KISS has played record-breaking tours around the globe. Notable performances include Super Bowl XXXIII in 1999, the 2002 Winter Olympics closing ceremonies, the American Idol season finale in 2009, and their November 2012 Monster tour kick-off with over 60,000 fans at River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Current members Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer will don their trademark personas with black and white make up and outlandish costumes to delight fans the world over. Their set will likely include KISS classics such as Detroit Rock City, Hotter than Hell, I was Made for Lovin' You, Rock and Roll All Nite and more, plus additional tracks from their new album Monster.

Released in October 2012, Monster is the much-anticipated follow up to the 2009 album, Sonic Boom. KISS decided to go old school in recording the album - using old analog equipment instead of digital - in the hopes of giving it a grittier sound. Monster offers up 13 new additions to the KISS songbook, with singles Hell or Hallelujah and Long Way Down.

The KISS Monster tour invades CUC, July 14, 7: 30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $20 to $125 (plus fees).

The KISS High School Homecoming Movie

If you were in high school in the 70s could you ever have imagined Kiss showing up at your school to perform? Well that’s what happened in 1975, at Cadillac High School in Michigan.

Here’s how the story goes, the school’s football team was struggling until they started cranking up Kiss in the locker room before games. After winning seven games in a row to become conference co-champs the team credited their success to Kiss. The band heard about the team and in 1975, visited the school and performed there during homecoming weekend.

Now the story is in the process of being tuned into a film. Vh1 Radio caught up with Gene Simmons last week at the opening of his new Rock & Brews restaurant in California and gave them an update on the status of the film: “There’s a gentleman named Mark Johnson who’s a producer, who’s produced the Narnia movies as well as other things. There have been some meetings. You know, they don’t call it development hell for nothing. It’s hell to launch anything and he’s almost there, the financing is almost there.” Gene went on to say, “I mean there’s a script, I read some of it. It’s about Cadillac. Kiss is part of the culture, the inspirational story about how a nowhere, nobody football team scaled to heights by infusing their blood with Kiss blood.” Gene added, “We are not producing this movie, by the way, this happened naturally out of Hollywood.”

10 Things You Didn’t Know About KISS’ Dynasty Album

Kiss released their Dynasty album on May 23, 1979 – exactly 34 years ago today.

Here are 10 facts you may not know about the album:

1. The decision to use Vini Poncia as producer came about from the band wanting to smooth over the declining situation with Peter Criss. Vini had produced Peter’s solo album and he [Peter] had demanded that Vini produce the next Kiss record (another considered choice was apparently the disco guru Giorgio Moroder). This tactic would backfire when Vini decided that Peter’s drumming was not good enough for the album. [Anton Fig drums on all tracks except for Dirty Livin'.]

2. Notable acts Vini produced, prior to Kiss, included Melissa Manchester and Leo Sayer.

"Dynasty" is the seventh studio album by KISS. It was produced by Vini Poncia and released on Casablanca Records on May 23, 1979. "Dynasty" marked the first time that the original four members of KISS did not all appear together for the entire album.

With the exception of his song "Dirty Livin'", Peter Criss does not appear on the album, and he would not perform on another KISS album until 1998's Psycho Circus. Drummer Anton Fig played on all the other tracks on "Dynasty".

"Dynasty" restored KISS to commercial prominence, reaching #9 on the US Billboard album chart. It was certified platinum by July by the RIAA.

Today In KISStory - 2009: KISS Rocked American Idol Finale

On this day in KISSTORY - May 20, 2009, KISS rocked over 25 million Americans with Detroit Rock City and Rock and Roll All Night as the band was front-and-center on the American Idol finale show performing with runner-up Adam Lambert.

- KISS was just about the best thing on Idol ALL SEASON LONG. - Rolling Stone

- a jaw-dropping, fist-pumping, pyro-enhanced performance with legendary rockers KISS. - MTV

- KISS Blow Up American Idol. Now that's the way to rock the house! - Associated Content

- It was a night to remember for all those members (including me) of the KISS Army. - WBAL Radio

- Carlos Santana had the unenviable task of following the act. He strummed out some of his famous licks, which felt very slow-paced after the unbelievable energy KISS brought to the theatre. I was actually screaming to see more KISS by this point. - TV Envy

Today In KISStory - 1980

Today In KISStory - May 20, 1980: KISS releases "Unmasked".

At the time it was the last studio album from the original lineup of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, although Criss actually had no involvement with the recording of the album. Anton Fig (uncredited) played all drums on the album. This album marked another departure for KISS: this was the first album since 1977's Love Gun  not to feature all members on vocals, excluding the four solo releases in 1978.

Although Unmasked marked a major departure musically for the band, the album reached #35 on the U.S. Billboard chart and was certified Gold by the RIAA on July 30, 1980.

Re-Creating Ace Frehley's Smoking Gibson Les Paul Guitar

So here you have a brief tour of how we re-created the Kiss Alive 1 - Gibson Les Paul, and were brought to Gibson Headquarters for Ace to sign and provide our missing links.

Don't be fooled, I'm the only one to replicate the original Ace Frehley Smoking Les Paul, originally built by John Robison. This is that story.

John's designs and his work making custom guitars were an inspiration and partially responsible for me building guitars as my livelihood. I remember watching Ace's guitar smoke and shoot rockets as a teenager in 1978, and building many half-cocked replicas and had stated building a reputation as someone who could recreate the guitars. I would hire myself out for special events, and also rent out the guitars to bands. I even designed a Red, White, and Blue color changing smoke guitar and played the Star Spangled Banner when Robbie Knievel jumped over Marshal Amps. Through the years I've accumulated much more information and was ready to replicate his design most accurately.

While KISS was filming their made for TV movie "KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park" for NBC, they held a free concert at Magic Mountain Amusement Park in Valencia, California. After the concert the band filmed segments lip syncing to the songs “Love Gun” and “Shock Me” to be included in the movie.

Tickets to the concert were given away via a local radio station. While filming the concert and filming the extra scenes, KISS members interacted with the crowd.

Here's some rare and grainy video footage of the free concert KISS gave at Magic Mountain Amusement Park in Valencia, California that eventually would be included as concert footage for the KISS movie "KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park"
