KISS Rocks Perth With Monster Show

 www.perthnow.com.au | Picture: Justin Benson-Cooper

FOUR decades after their original formation, KISS certainly still knows how to put on a Monster of a show.

In the first performance of their milestone 40th anniversary year, the rock ‘n’ roll superstars kicked off their Australian tour with metal band Motley Crue at Perth Arena last night.

It was a larger-than-life spectacle featuring all the KISS concert staples fans have come to know and love over the years including make-up, high heels, pyrotechnics, blood spitting, fire-breathing, guitar licking, sparking guitars and a levitating drum kit for the band’s first live show on Perth soil since 2004.

And age proved to be nothing but a number to co-frontmen Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, who strutted around on stage oozing every ounce of the confident rock star persona they’ve always embodied.

The loyal KISS Army battalions were out in force, packing Perth Arena to the roof, rocking face-paint or official merchandise and screaming the words to every song.

It was a hit-packed two-hour set featuring the likes of Detroit Rock City, Shout It Out Loud, I Love It Loud, Psycho Circus, War Machine, an acoustic version of Shandi and Black Diamond.

There were a handful of newer hits from their latest album Monster, which was released last year, including Hell or Hallelujah, Wall of Sound and Outta This World, which saw guitarist Tommy Thayer take on lead vocals.

The crowd pleasing three song encore exploded with Lick It Up, I Was Made for Lovin’ You and Rock and Roll All Night.

Not a band to stand in the shadows, Motley Crue took to the stage with their own brand of showmanship earlier in the evening, kicking things off with a grand entrance featuring the band waltzing through the crowd, flanked by girls and spraying smoke.

Girls, Girls, Girls, Kick Start My Heart, Home Sweet Home, Dr Feelgood and Shout At The Devil all featured and drummer Tommy Lee wowed the crowd by taking his drum kit on a 360-degree rollercoaster ride.

Irish rock band Thin Lizzy performed a set including Killer on the Loose, Don’t Believe a Word, Suicide, Jailbreak and The Boys Are Back in Town on the night.

Review: KISS, Motley Crue & Thin Lizzy At Perth Arena

Live review: KISS, MOTLEY CRUE at THIN LIZZY at Perth Arena, February 28 2013

SOME of KISS’ staging staff may be lined up outside the unemployment office in Perth this morning – but the first-night gaffes did absolutely nothing to detract from a dazzling performance from the veteran glam rockers.

Bassist Gene Simmons, in full battle regalia and dangling from cables, was forced to crawl onto his platform 15 metres above the Perth Arena stage before performing “God Of Thunder” on the first night of the Monster Tour, which also included a disappointing Motley Crue and feisty Thin Lizzy.

The microphone cut out during Simmons’ 35-year-old pre-amble to the song, forcing him to say “well alright” twice.

When guitarist Tommy Thayer “shot” balls of fire from his instrument during his solo turn, the explosions in the overhead rig were nowhere near where he was aiming. The flashpots during the “clap” breakdown of “I Was Made For Loving You” were so out-of-synch that singer Paul Stanley was left with a bemused expression.

Today In KISStory - February 28, 2005: KISS appears in Burbank, California on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to help celebrate the birthday of 10 year old David Dingman-Grover who had recently undergone cancer treatment. David was told he wouldn't live to see age 10, but he proved doctors wrong, and his favorite band KISS showed up and surprised David on this special occasion.

KISS presented David with an autographed Silvertone Paul Stanley signature guitar. Paul Stanley said:

"This is so important for us to be a part of a miracle. People talk about we're past the age of miracles but here's proof David is a living miracle and we can all be a part of it."

KISS And Make-Up For V8 Driver James Courtney

www.adelaidenow.com.au | Photo Source: The Advertiser

HOLDEN V8 Supercar driver James Courtney is feeling like a rock'n'roll superstar as the Clipsal 500 roars into town.

In the lead-up to the four-day motorsport carnival, which begins today, the 33-year-old and his pit crew - Grant Milnes, Glen Fisher and Justin Burns - transformed into KISS look-alikes.

Joking that he may have dislocated his tongue, Courtney said he loved playing "the demon", Gene Simmons.

"I felt like a rocker when I had the make-up on," he said.

Courtney was also living out a boyhood fantasy by "becoming" a member of KISS, who will perform at Sunday's after-race concert.

"They are an iconic rock band," he said.

"Dad would have them on in the car when he was driving me to go-kart meetings."

Make-up artist Sam Gehlken from Make Up to Shake Up was responsible for transformation of Courtney and his pit crew, Grant Milnes, Glen Fisher and Justin Burns.

Ms Gehlken, who at 28 is too young to remember the Kissmania of the late 1970s and early 80s, studied the Dynasty album cover.

Featuring the four original band members' faces in close-up it was the perfect guide to their make-up.

Each face took about half an hour to complete.

"I used face paint," she said.

"I have done KISS make-up for people before who are going to fancy dress parties but never this full-on."

Courtney and his pit crew were initially "scared" at the thought of wearing KISS make-up, but loved the end result, she said.

" One of the guys said `I don't want to look at myself in the mirror', took a selfie (photograph) and said `That looks amazing'," she said.

"They all thought it was hilarious."

KISS Fan Follows The Band Round Australia

www.abc.net.au

Ian Spear remembers a time when he'd never heard of Kiss. Then he caught the band on Simon Townsend's Wonder World and his life changed forever.

Today, Ian's "running out of walls" to hang his memorabilia. A Bunbury restaurant owner and chef in real life, he's about to follow Kiss around the country as they embark on their latest Australian tour.

The attraction is partly the image and partly the music, he says, and a Kiss concert is like no other.

"They put on a show that you'll never see again."

Ian's wife is very understanding of his obsession, he says, though she has put a ban on body art.

Listen to the interview as Ian talks to Barry Nicholls on WA Regional Drive about the mystique of it all.

Fans Share Their "TT Guitar" Experiences

www.tommythayer.com

Here are a few shared experiences from fans regarding their Tommy Thayer Epiphone Limited Edition Spaceman Les Paul:

Tommy took his time with us, we took some cool pictures with the guitar and he was very nice. I was in seventh heaven when I saw Tommy playing on the guitar he just signed about one hour earlier - that is a feeling I`ll never forget.

Now Tommys guitar - mine :-) is hanging on my wall with the other guitars I have. When I look at the guitar today, I think back at the good experience I had when I bought this guitar from Tommy.

Me and my wife are looking forward to see you in Norway this summer. I`ll bring the guitar so we can take the picture all three.

Best regards,
Cato

This week the quiet and humble rock hero shared some of his career experiences with The Examiner, talking about the infamous KISS audition, the first Meat Loaf tour, playing with Alice Cooper, along with his various bands and tribute projects.

Rock Stars Record KISS 40th Anniversary Tribute Album To Benefit Montreal Cancer Hospice

 www.blogs.montrealgazette.com

Montreal rock journalist and KISS fanatic Mitch Lafon wanted to help raise some cash to benefit The Vaudreuil-Soulanges Palliative Care Residence after his father-in-law James Stanley Droulis passed away from cancer last month. Within days of dreaming up his KISS 40th Anniversary Tribute Album for charity – the album will be called A World With Heroes – a who’s who of the hard-rock world have come on board, including members of such bands as Cinderella, Guns N’ Roses, Whitesnake and Montreal’s very own Slaves on Dope.

“I was very impressed with the staff and care given at the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Palliative Care Residence and I wanted to give back, but didn’t know how,” says Lafon, a West-Island native. “A couple of weeks after my father-in-law passed away, KISS – one of my favorite bands – celebrated their 40th anniversary, and that’s when the light in my head went off. Having been a rock journalist for over 20 years, I thought why not combine my love for KISS, the friends I’ve made in the rock world and do something spectacular for the palliative care unit? I could certainly raise greater awareness and funds this way than anything I could do on my own.”

The list of rock stars who have agreed to record tracks for the KISS tribute album is impressive: Eric Brittingham (bass – Cinderella) , Jeff LaBar (guitars – Cinderella) and Troy Lucketta (drums – Tesla); Terry Ilous (Great White), Bumblefoot (GNR), Mark Slaughter (Slaughter), Russ Dwarf (The Killer Dwarfs), Ron Young (Little Caesar), Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake), Rex Brown (Pantera, Kill Devil Hill), Dery Grehan (Honeymoon Suite), Bill Leverty (Firehouse), Phil Lewis (LA GUNS), Doro, Tommy Denander, Slaves on Dopes, Phil Naro (ex-Talas and Peter Criss), Ron Keel and Sean Kelly (Nelly Furtado’s band and Helix). Lafon expects to announce more musicians shortly.

“I did my first interview when I was 11 years old, back in 1980 with non other than Gene Simmons of KISS,” says Lafon.

“It’s been years of doing interviews and cultivating friendships,” Lafon continues. “I simply called up ‘my rock star buddies’ or emailed them, told them my plan and one-by-one they hopped on board, many saying, ‘Anything for you Mitch.’ Everybody participating on this album is donating their time and talents. Nobody made any demands. Everybody just said, ‘What song do you want and when do you want it by and it shall be done.’ It really was that easy. Egos have been put aside and truly human spirit has prevailed.”

Montreal rockers Slaves on Dope – who themselves are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year – will record two songs, Anything For My Baby and New York Groove.

“Mitch mentioned his project to me and who was involved, and honestly, we did it because of Mitch – I like him a lot, he’s really nice, sincere and a huge KISS fan, and when he told us why he was doing this, it was a slam-dunk,” says Slaves on Dope frontman and CHOM deejay Jason Rockman. “We love early KISS and to be attached to this project is really nice.”

KISS fans can be a part of the creation of this album by donating money or pre-ordering the album via Pledgemusic. There’s a ton of really cool memorabilia being offered to donors.

Says Lafon, “The initial goal is to raise $15, 000 and it’s intended for the charity. We will have to pay the ‘mechanical licenses’ for the permission to use the songs – which has nothing to do with KISS, it’s simply the law – and we’ll have to pay for the manufacturing of the CDs which runs about $1.50 to 2$ per disc.

“I want to be very clear: The mastering house is taking NO money. They have donated their services. The graphic artist doing the album artwork has donated his services. The ‘rock stars’ have donated their talents. The artists are assuming their own recording costs. I’m not taking a single cent from this, not even as much as paying for a cup of coffee for myself. Hopefully, the project will not only reach the goal but double, triple, etc. it. Would be nice to raise $100,000$ or $200,000 and more.”

The deadline to make a pledge for the A World With Heroes KISS 40th Anniversary Tribute album for cancer care is April 17. Click here for more info and to make a pledge, click here for Mitch Lafon’s all-star rock’n’roll Dropping The Needle podcasts; and here for POP TART’s interview with Gene Simmons of KISS

KISS Star Out On His ‘Ace’

www.nypost.com | POST WIRE SERVICES

He might have to KISS his Westchester home goodbye.

Ace Frehley, a founding member of rock band KISS, is in jeopardy of losing his Yorktown home to the bank.

The US National Bank Association, which started foreclosure proceedings on Feb. 15, said the makeup-faced ’70s star stopped paying his mortgage in 2011.

The former KISS guitarist, who rock and rolled all night, seems to have hit rock bottom financially. The Yorktown receiver’s office recorded thousands of dollars of tax liens on the property.

New KISS Album Is Possible, Says Tommy Thayer

 www.metalforcesmagazine.com | Photo: www.KISSopolis.com

Tommy Thayer told Anthony Morgan of Metal Forces in a recent interview that KISS may make another new album - possibly in the next year or two. Interviewer Anthony Morgan commented to Tommy "A successor to Monster would be hugely welcomed by KISS fanatics". Tommy states:

“We take one day at a time here,” the axe-slinger cautions. “I could see that happening again possibly in the next year or two, but nothing has definitely been decided on. It’s a lot of fun and a great experience to record with these guys, which is actually unique in a lot of ways because most bands don’t enjoy spending time and working together like we do. I know people say ‘Oh, he’s just saying that,’ but it’s true. We really enjoy working together, and recording and writing. With that in mind I can see it happening more, but again, there’s nothing planned yet. I hope we do some more recording and writing, and put out another record. I think it would be just another step in the Kiss story, and something I’d look forward to.”

KISS 1978 Solo Album Poster In TED Movie

KISS really is everywhere! We spotted a KISS 1978 solo album poster in Seth MacFarlane's 2012 movie TED. You can clearly see the KISS poster during the scene in which TED tells Flash Gordon (actor Sam Jones) "If you can punch through this wall, you really are Flash Gordon".

This is the best screenshot we could find.

A History Of Black Sabbath’s Drummers - Eric Singer

Over the weekend, Black Sabbath announced their new record 13 will be released in June, and revealed that former Rage Against The Machine/Audioslave drummer Brad Wilk played on the album. So it’s the perfect time to review some of the many musicians who bashed the skins for the metal legends over the decades.

We could give our takes on them… but we thought we’d leave that to the band’s guitarist, leader and the only guy to play on every Sabbath album, Tony Iommi (via his autobiography, Iron Man: My Journey Through Heaven And Hell With Black Sabbath).

WHO: Eric Singer, who today is most well-known as the man who wears Peter Criss’s makeup in KISS.

ERA: Mid-’80s, on 1986′s Seventh Star and 1987′s The Eternal Idol.

B.S.: Played in Lita Ford’s touring band

A.S.: He left Sabbath with singer Ray Gillen to join Badlands. In 1989, he was hired to play on a solo tour by Paul Stanley of KISS, which led to joining KISS after the untimely passing of drummer Eric Carr. After KISS reunited with their original lineup, Singer went on to play with Alice Cooper and Queen’s Brian May. He has since rejoined KISS.

WHERE IS HE NOW: Still with KISS, he’s played on their last two albums, Sonic Boom and Monster.

TONY SAYS: “Eric had this eighties hairstyle which made him look a little bit like a woman, and so we started calling him Shirley. He is a good drummer and he has done well for himself, playing with Alice Cooper and KISS and the like. When we had Eric and (bass player) Dave (Spitz) in the band, they were a great little team. They loved to play, and would try stuff all through the night. They were always energetic and that was good for me as well.”

Rocker Ace Frehley May KISS Yorktown Home Goodbye

www.lohud.com

A rock ’n’ roll legend may be KISS-ing his Yorktown house goodbye.

A bank is accusing Ace Frehley, a former member of the rock group KISS, of not paying the mortgage on his Yorktown home for almost two years. U.S. Bank National Association claims that the rock star, whose real name is Paul Frehley, stopped paying his $735,000 mortgage on March 1, 2011.

In its Feb. 15 foreclosure filing, the bank asked the court to order a sale of the home to pay for the outstanding principal of $703,581.48 plus interest, late charges and other expenses.

Frehley, 61, borrowed the money in 2006 for the one-family home at 1347 Spring Valley Road that sits on 3.01 acres. The 2,441-square-foot house has two floors, three bedrooms and three bathrooms.

Frehley could not be reached for comment, and his personal assistant John Ostrosky did not respond to an email sent to an address posted on Frehley’s website. One of Frehley’s companies, Max Cake Productions, uses the home as its business address.

The bank’s attorney, Elizabeth A. Clarke at Shapiro, DiCaro & Barak in Rochester, declined to comment on the foreclosure filing.

According to Yorktown records, Jendell Productions bought the home on Nov. 17, 2000, for $650,000. The company then transferred ownership to Frehley in 2004 for no money.

Jendell is the name of the fictional home planet for Frehley’s extraterrestrial “Spaceman” stage character, who wore silver face paint and black lipstick.

Frehley’s house also has almost two years of unpaid taxes, according to the Yorktown tax receiver’s office, which hasn’t received a payment since Dec. 30, 2011. Back taxes include a 2011 lien of $5,131.61 for town and county taxes, as well as $13,425.94 for unpaid 2012 county, school and town taxes.

Frehley, now a solo musician, became famous in the 1970s as the lead guitarist for KISS, a band beloved for its outlandish costumes, stage shows and heavy metal music. Frehley left the group in 1982 and rejoined it from 1996 to 2002.

KISS charted its biggest hits while Frehley was a member in the 1970s. The group’s highest-charting song was the ballad “Beth,” which hit No. 7 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1976.

Gene Simmons Charges Up To $1500 To Speak To Fans

Source: www.news.com.au | Photo: AP Photo/Marco Ugarte

KISS rocker Gene Simmons is charging fans up to $1500 to hear him talk about himself.

The 63-year Simmons has added a speaking engagement in Melbourne during Kiss' tour next month.

Tickets to hear Gene Simmons range from $1500 for platinum seats to $285 for gold seats and $108 for the cheap seats.
The speaking tickets are more expensive than those to see Kiss perform live with support acts Motley Crue and Thin Lizzy.

Only one hundred of the $1500 tickets will be sold, which include a lunch package with Simmons in attendance for two hours, a photograph with Simmons and one item signed as long as it is not a guitar.

Cashed up Kiss fans also get a t-shirt which reads "I had lunch with Gene Simmons" for their $1500.

The speaking engagement takes place at Etihad Stadium on March 5 from 10.45am, requiring many fans to take the day off work.

Fans have already been stung for Kiss Australian concert tickets which include a $600 VIP dinner package, $250 for the "Monster zone" and $125 for the cheapest seats.

The band sold a $1500 VIP ticket which includes a personal meet and greet with Simmons and bandmate Paul Stanley, as well as priority seating at the concerts.

Simmons will only speak in Melbourne, Kiss' most lucrative market in Australia, with diehard fans expected to fly in from interstate for the one-off event.

The band, who pioneered making millions from merchandise, have relaunched their brand of Kiss icypoles to coincide with their Australian tour.

Kiss beer is also available in Australian supermarkets and bottle shops.

KISS Coming Back To Halifax In August

  www.thechronicleherald.ca | Photo: TED PRITCHARD

Metro will once again be Halifax Rock City when greasepainted rock legends Kiss return to the region this summer.

Bassist Gene Simmons jumped the love gun and posted Canadian tour dates on his personal website GeneSimmons.com on Thursday.

The coast-to-coast trek features three Atlantic shows: Saint John, N.B., on July 31, Halifax on Aug. 1 and St. John’s, N.L., on Aug. 3, for what will likely be a series of indoor concerts, their first here since performing on the Halifax Commons in 2009, one week after an appearance by Paul McCartney.

At press time, the shows had not been posted on the band’s official tour schedule. KissOnline.com only includes dates for the band’s March tour of Australia and a June trip through Europe.

Much like Rush’s recent announcement of its July 12 show at the Halifax Metro Centre in an email to its fans, Simmons posted the dates before the show has been officially made public by a promoter or venue.

A spokesperson for the Metro Centre says they can’t confirm that Kiss is coming, but a sellout night with the Gods of Thunder would be a notable event in the calendar for its 35th anniversary year.

Before the Commons concert, Kiss previously appeared twice at the Halifax Forum, on its Alive! tour in 1976 with Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, and kicking off its Love Gun tour in 1977 with Cheap Trick.

The band was scheduled to play Sydney’s Centre 200, the Halifax Metro Centre and Moncton Coliseum on its 1990 Hot in the Shade tour, but the shows were cancelled, reportedly due to an injury suffered onstage by singer-guitarist Paul Stanley in Pennsylvania.

Strange Ways KISS Podcast - Episode #6 - 'Sweet 16 Of the Solo Albums'

Episode #6 finds your KISS army brothers discussing our own personal picks for what we're calling our 'Sweet 16 of the Solo Albums'...see if your faves match up to ours.

Eric Singer Praises Alex Van Halen

 www.vhnd.com

KISS’s Eric Singer contributed to the hardcover photo book, Van Halen: A Visual History, by Neil Zlozower. The Van Halen News Desk has the exclusive on what he had to say about the first time he saw Van Halen in concert:

“Alex the Animal. The first time I heard Van Halen was “Runnin’ with the Devil” on the radio on WMMS in Cleveland.

I remember thinking (along with everyone else), “Who the hell is this, and who is this guitarist?” Well, we all know they went on to open for Black Sabbath and really give them a run for their money.

“By the time the second Van Halen record hit, I finally got to see the new kids on the block live. And ALIVE they were! I had never seen a band come on stage with such energy and fire. Not to mention the sheer power that they each presented on their instruments. Eddie had opened the door for the band with his groundbreaking style, but the rest of the band were no sideshow either. Especially Alex.

“This guy was all over the kit from the opening to the end of the night and, if I remember correctly, did three different drum solos throughout the show. Even the first song ended with a solo flurry, just to set the tone for the evening.

“Alex has always had his own voice on the drums, which is the hardest instrument to achieve that on. From his trademark popping snare sound and high-pitched tom tom tuning to his electronic Simmons phase, on up to the Bonham-esque thunder of “Poundcake,” he has retained something unique and special on the instrument that has inspired many a drummer for the past thirty years.”
