Ace Frehley To Appear On NBC's "The Today Show"

Ace Frehley will make an appearance on NBC's "The Today Show" this coming Thursday, November 3rd. Ace will discuss his new autobiography "No Regrets".

Gene Simmons Branded 'Sex Addict'

Gene Simmons has been branded a "sex addict" by his former bandmate.

The KISS rocker - who married longterm girlfriend Shannon Tweed earlier this month - only had sex "once or twice a year" in the early days of the band but slept with "hundreds" of women as he became more successful, Ace Frehley has claimed.

Ace - who gave up drinking alcohol in 2006 - wrote in his new book 'No Regrets: A Rock 'n' Roll Memoir': "I believe Gene is a sex addict, in much the same way I am an alcoholic. If you've been with only one or two women (and had to beg for whatever you got off them), it must be intoxicating to suddenly have groupies falling all over you.

"You go from getting laid once or twice a year to getting laid a hundred times by a hundred different women."

Ace - who performed with KISS from 1973 to 1982 then rejoined in 1996 for six years - believes Gene's promiscuity had a "negative" effect on the band and says the rocker was not selective about who he got intimate with.

He added: "We all have our issues and vices, and I saw Gene's behavior affect him and the band sometimes in a negative way... He would f**k almost anything. Short, tall, plump, svelte, attractive, merely tolerable."

Ace Frehley Believes Fame Turned Gene Simmons Into A 'Sex Addict'

Rock wildman Gene Simmons struggled to bed women before finding fame but the glare of the spotlight turned him into a "sex addict", according to his Kiss band mate Ace Frehley.

Simmons, who wed his long-term lover Shannon Tweed in October, only slept with women "once or twice a year" in the early days of the band, Frehley claims in a new book.
However, after shooting to stardom, he bedded hundreds of groupies to make up for lost time.

According to New York Post gossip column Page Six, Frehley is quoted in new tell-all tome No Regrets as saying, "I believe Gene is a sex addict, in much the same way I am an alcoholic. If you've been with only one or two women (and had to beg for whatever you got off them), it must be intoxicating to suddenly have groupies falling all over you.

"You go from getting laid once or twice a year to getting laid a hundred times by a hundred different women. We all have our issues and vices, and I saw Gene's behavior affect him and the band sometimes in a negative way... (He) would f**k almost anything. Short, tall, plump, svelte, attractive, merely tolerable."

Today In KISStory - 1998

Today In KISStory - October 31, 1998: KISS kicks off their "Psycho Circus" tour on Halloween night at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA.

Psycho Circus Tour was a Kiss concert tour in 1998-1999. It was the first concert tour in history to have 3-D visual effects. One notable show on the tour was the March 12 Bremen, Germany show. After the opening song, Paul Stanley announced that the local fire marshall had banned Kiss from using any pyrotechnics during the show. They used a translator on stage to let the crowd understand exactly what Paul was saying. At the end of the show the band let off the shows worth of pyro in one shot. Kiss is now banned from playing Bremen.

Today In KISStory - 1979

Today In KISStory - October 31, 1979: The broadcast of the KISS appearance on NBC-TVs 'The Tomorrow Show' with Tom Snyder.

Perhaps the most outrageous interview seen on Snyder's show occurred on Halloween 1979, when the rock band KISS appeared to promote their album, Dynasty. During that 25-minute "interview", the conversation degenerated into a somewhat chaotic exchange between Snyder and a very drunk Ace Frehley, who picked up Snyder's teddy bear, put the wristlets from his costume on the bear, and laughed, "the only Spacebear in captivity! I've got him — he's captured!" When Snyder asked Ace if his costume was that of some sort of spaceman, Frehley quipped, "No, actually I'm a plumber." Snyder shot back, "Well, I've got a piece of pipe backstage I'd like to have you work on." The inebriated Frehley replied "Tell me about it!" and clapped his hands and cackled hysterically at the exchange. Years later, Gene Simmons revealed on his website that he felt "betrayed" by the other band members during this interview. Shortly thereafter, drummer Peter Criss officially left the band and subsequently appeared on the show, making Snyder the first host to have a member of KISS appearing without makeup in public.

Celebrating 33 Years of 'KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park'

In 1978, there were two things on the minds of boys ages 5 to 16. OK, maybe three. They were KISS, " Star Wars," and girls. You pick the order they were in for you personally. I was 6, so girls really hadn't figured into the equation yet.

Girls were on boys' minds for the obvious reasons. " Star Wars" was popular because it had just been released the year before and blew everyone away with its groundbreaking, never-before-seen special effects and imagery. After only being around since 1973, KISS was the hottest band in the world because of their shockingly explosive on-stage spectacle and look.

They had already released several best-selling studio, live, and solo albums. They had t-shirts, stickers, belt buckles, and everything else you can think of with their logo and likenesses plastered on them. The band even had a comic book that featured the members as superheroes that was published through Marvel Comics.

Paul Stanley Undergoes Successful Throat Surgery

KISS lead singer Paul Stanley underwent successful surgery for "recurring vocal cord issues" Tuesday that the musician said Wednesday "come with 40 years of preaching rock 'n' roll."

His doctors say Stanley, who's been touring and recording with KISS for nearly 40 years, will make a "swift and complete" recovery, according to a statement from his publicist.

"I hold myself to a higher standard than others do," Stanley said. "With that in mind, I wanted to remedy a few minor issues that come with 40 years of preaching rock 'n' roll."

Stanley, 59, is known for his energetic -- and loud -- shows as front man and guitarist for legendary hard rock group.

KISS, one of the longest-running rock acts, stays busy on the road and in the studio. Stanley is producing "Monster," their 20th studio album due out in 2012 as they embark on another global tour.

"Parasite" On The First-Ever KISS Kruise

Cult Film Fans Celebrate 25th Anniversary of 'Trick Or Treat'

Star/Brian Tucker

Twenty five years ago, on Oct. 24, 1986, the filmed-in-Wilmington movie "Trick or Treat" was released.

It wasn't a huge success at the time, but "Trick or Treat" has since become a cult classic among horror and music fans. Both adored and ridiculed - it stars a young Marc "Skippy" Price of TV's "Family Ties" and features rock stars Gene Simmons of KISS and Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath in small roles - "Trick or Treat" is mentioned on countless horror websites. The entertainment site Ain't It Cool News recently included it in its celebration of cult Halloween movies.

Joel Soisson, who was in Wilmington last summer as a producer of "Piranha 3DD," which is scheduled for release next year, was a co-writer and co-producer on "Trick or Treat."

Soisson and then-producing partner Michael S. Murphey, also a "Treat" co-writer, were line producers on 1985's "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge." Soon after its release, Soisson said he was contacted by the Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis, who founded DEG, Wilmington's first movie studio.

"He calls me," Soisson said, slipping into an Italian accent, "and says, 'You come and work with me now. I want you to make Trick and Treat.' "

De Laurentiis presented Soisson and Murphey with a Stephen King story about a guy going door to door with a pumpkin on his head, but Soisson thought it was terrible.

"He says, 'OK, you think it's awful. Tell me what you want and I make it. Just give you a few million dollars.' "

Rhet Topham, who was eventually given story credit for "Trick or Treat," pitched the producers an idea about a kid who plays a record backwards, making a rock star named Sammi Curr come back from the dead. Soisson and Murphey liked the idea, and thought the Sammi Curr character could be turned into a franchise like "Nightmare."

"(De Laurentiis) kept going, 'I want Freddy Krueger,'" Soisson said. "That's where this whole Sammi Curr idea came from ... (Curr) didn't come out your dreams, he comes out of a record. Yet the way he infiltrates the real world was similar to Freddy (and) the scarring on his face was derivative in that way."

The movie was written during a time when Tipper Gore and her Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) were in full swing, accusing some artists of delivering Satanic messages, while critics claimed the PMRC was trying to censor artists.

Osbourne and the band Judas Priest had been slapped with lawsuits claiming their music led to teen suicides.

"That's one of the reasons we jumped in," Soisson said. "Almost the reason for making the movie was to have fun, because the whole Satan thing was ridiculously overblown."

Topham originally turned in a draft that was very dark. Soisson and Murphey tried to lighten it up and brought in director Charlie Martin Smith. An actor in "American Graffiti" and "Starman," Smith had few directing credits. But the producers didn't want to make just another horror movie and they liked that Smith made little sense as a director.

The main character in "Trick or Treat" is a nerdy heavy metal kid named Eddie Weinbauer, who was played by Marc Price, the nerdy neighbor Skippy from "Family Ties," which was a big TV hit at the time.

"I wasn't that familiar with Skippy," Soisson said. "Marc was a good actor but also a comedian. It was a comedy horror movie and you could believe he was an outcast."

Price points to the director, Smith, as to why he was cast.

"Let's face it," Price said. "He played Toad (in "American Graffiti"), nerdy characters, and here was this nerdy kid. What a great director for an actor because he was an actor first."

Sossion remembers beginning the movie with the set being blessed by a Catholic priest.

"Dino was ferociously Catholic," Soisson said. "We were happy to take it."

Soisson recalled the Wilmington community as being more than welcoming.

"It was, 'Come on in, trample my lawn and break my furniture and scratch my antiques.' They just want to be involved in the movie business. It was refreshing because in L.A., you get chased out of neighborhoods."

Soisson remembers getting permission to shut down the Isabel Holmes Bridge and sending a car off it for the film's finale.
"That was one of the things I loved about Wilmington. If you did that in L.A. it would be, 'We want to shut down a bridge and drive a car off it in rush hour. What do you think?' 'Uh, no. We don't think that's a good idea.' Here in Wilmington it's, 'Yeah! Let's do it. Why not'? It's part of that can-do attitude. I'm sure the people who were waiting two hours while we did that were not appreciating Wilmington's can-do attitude, but we sure did."

The actor Tony Fields ("A Chorus Line") was hired to play Sammi Curr. Price said Fields, who died in 1995, would remain in character to intimidate him.

"He really was flamboyant, bigger than life," Soisson said. "I don't think he ever stopped being Sammie Curr when he was with us."

KISS bassist Simmons played radio DJ Nuke. Soisson said he believes Simmons' agent accepted the role without telling him.

"Gene had no interest in doing this movie. He came in with a bit of an attitude," Soisson said. "It sounds like I'm slamming Gene. I'm actually not. In a way I have more respect for the man. He comes in and does a professional job when he's clearly not there on his choice."

Osborne, conversely, relished the idea of playing a preacher.

"I think he liked playing the other end where he's the preacher, railing against people like himself," Soisson said. "He was a delight, (but) he was so nervous ... I think now he's a lot better before the camera ... but back then acting was not an easy thing for him."

Price concurred.

"It was an important role for (Osbourne) because he was the guy who was accused of lending a hand by his music's lyrics to someone's suicide. So this was an important opportunity for him to play one of the very people coming after him to show the absurdity of it."

Soisson said he still gets letters and emails about "Trick or Treat." The movie has gone in and out of print but can be seen on YouTube.

"I never thought it would have staying power or any real impact," Soisson said. " We never got a letter from Tipper, though. Not sure if she saw it."

Ace Frehley To Play Halloween Show In Foxboro

Boston Music Spotlight

Ace Frehley has revealed plans for a solo tour this fall. The founding member and lead guitarist of KISS will perform at Foxboro's Showcase Live on Monday, October 31. Tickets for the Halloween show are available through Ticketmaster for $27.50.

The show will take place the day before the release of his autobiography, "No Regrets: A Rock 'N' Roll Memoir". Co-written by New York Times journalist Joe Layden, who also worked with Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine on his autobiography "Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir", No Regrets' chronicles Frehley's remarkable career in music.

"I just turned 59, I think it's about time I start getting the stuff out and writing in down on paper before I forget it," Frehley said in an interview with Artisan News Service earlier this year.

Frehley, who concluded his tenure as "Spaceman" with KISS in 2002, has remained busy with a solo career. His latest release, 2009's Anomaly, debuted at #27 on the Billboard 200. Frehley produced most of the album himself with some help from Marti Frederiksen (Aerosmith). It marked his first set of all new material since 1989's Trouble Walkin'.

Fans attending the Foxboro show can purchase a special $200 VIP package, which includes a t-shirt, exclusive tour laminate, access to a meet and greet session with a photo opportunity and a copy of Anomaly for him to sign. However, the package does not include a ticket to the show.

Gene Simmons Spat And Had Crabs

That's according to his Kiss band member (and onetime roommate) Ace Frehley in Frehley's new book, No Regrets.

Writes Ace:
"Fastidious if not downright anal in his professional life, Gene was an utter mess in his personal life.

"As I quickly discovered, Gene was an epic slob."

Ace remembers multiple instances of Gene--whom he admits might have been affected by all that flame swallowing--spitting all over the place.

One time, he says, "Gene cleared his throat, dragged up a thick wad of phlegm, and spat it onto the carpet.

"What wasn't understandable was his insistence on spitting all over the floor.
